I do not own stock (other than perhaps within mutual or index funds) in any tech company and don’t do any direct consulting or paid work for any tech companies. I am, however, CEO of ConnectSafely.org, a non-profit internet safety organization, that does receive funding from Facebook, Google and several other tech companies as disclosed on the Supporters page at ConnectSafely.org. I also sit on safety advisory boards at Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat without direct compensation. I am also on the board of directors of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) that has relationships with some tech companies. I am not compensated by NCMEC nor receive any direct or indirect benefits from any NCMEC related sponsorships.
I generally disclose any potential conflicts of interest in newspaper articles and blog posts and, when time permits, on radio or TV when commenting on safety or privacy related matters affecting companies that support ConnectSafely. There are cases, such as short on-air comments, debriefs and sound bites, when there isn’t sufficient time for a disclosure. When speaking or writing about these companies, I strive to be accurate and fair and to criticize these companies when it’s appropriate.
